I paint almost every single day: for practice, for the joy of it, and because there isn't anything I want to watch on TV most nights. The problem is that I do not always have a great concept that I want to work with. In the past I've slapped together a half baked idea and felt unsatisfied with the results. This is when I decided to start making mini paintings!
Mini paintings are an opportunity for me to create something that is just for fun. In these works I'm letting go of the pressure to communicate an idea or add to a portfolio. I'm just doing something purely for amusement. So far I've worked with Star Wars, silly dogs and normcore fashion as themes.
I also have the ability to try out new supplies and techniques on a small scale. This keeps things cost effective for me and saves room in my small apartment. Lately I've been looking into different supports for my paintings. In the Star Wars set of paintings I used Aquaboard and the Unorthodogs are on unfinished wood panel; both of these surfaces are great to work with!
The other purpose behind the mini paintings is (here comes the sales pitch) to create original artwork at an affordable price point. The small size doesn't use up very much paint and I can make an entire painting in one sitting. The originals are only $75 and I want to have mini prints available for about $15. The cool thing is that if nobody buys any, all of the paintings are of things that I like or find amusing so I'll just have an ever growing mini collection. Buy a mini painting here!
